Trick or Treat…

I don’t remember ever buying a costume. My brother, sister and I trick or treated for UNICEF every year. My mother had costumes in the attack from her dancing days. Every year we excitedly looked through them as if we had discovered some sort of costume treasure chest. Our creations were stunning…at least we thought so. My favorite candy was bubble gum and peanut butter cups. I didn’t like getting apples. I loved bobbing for them though, which was a yearly ritual.

The last time I trick or treated I was in high school…a senior I think…and my neighborhood was very popular for the trick or treaters. The little ones would start early and trick or treating would go on until late in the evening as the older kids would scour the neighborhood. The little ones were always so cute…there were ballerina’s, princesses, pirates and cowboys. Sometimes they were shy and sometimes they were loud…sometimes the parents were more excited than they were.

I wanted candy…my sisters boyfriend was over. I’m not sure who’s idea this was (probably my sisters) but we grabbed a sheet…I got on his shoulders…I threw the sheet over my head and BAM! I was a tall pregnant ghost! It worked…we trick or treated for over an hour. I often wonder how he managed to walk the neighborhood with me on his shoulders with a sheet totally covering him…but he did. I carried a pillow case, of course, for my candy. When we were done my pillow case was almost full. We dumped it on the kitchen table and sorted and picked as we looked for all the “good stuff.”

I don’t trick or treat anymore, although I do still like to dress up. I rarely get trick or treaters on my street…I buy the candy and I wait…last year we only had two…I had to chase one down because they went past my house…I think I scared them.

This year I want to be scared…My husband and I are going to Halloween Horror nights…who knows…maybe I’ll dress up!

I wish you all a Wonderful Wednesday with thoughts of childhood memories that make you smile and the creativity to make a difference!
